During the 1990s, the FDA banned the use of silicone implants. However, in 2006, after some numerous researches and studies, it reverses its decision and it is now all right to use it in breast augmentation procedures. Whether to use silicone or saline for your surgery lies in your hands. Here are couples of differences between the two products as outlined below:

Silicone comes from organic polymer, which can be in a solid, liquid or in gel form while saline is a salt water solution which is similar to the fluid that makes up the human body.

Physicians claimed that when these two products are presented blindly to the patients, most of them will choose silicone because it feels naturally. The gel has a viscosity property comparable to a human fat which is found in the breast area. On the other hand, saline implants are not squeezable and it will produce a "sloshing" noise once in placed. However, because of the new techniques developed over the recent years, a lot of complaints are now unheard of.

Saline implants are inserted empty and will soon be filled up with fluid once it is on the right place. This will result in a small surgical scar. Additionally, the size of the implant is adjustable even after the operation using a non surgical procedure. This is quite opposite with the silicone based implants because they are inserted in their full form and therefore a large incision is needed. To adjust the size or shape, additional surgeries are needed and the entire implant would have to be replaced.

Both implants have similar risks including infection, pain and damage to nerves. However, the most noted side effects with saline implants are wrinkling and folding of the implant shell while patients with silicone implants reported a change in appearance in the breast due to shrinking of the tissue.

If you are a recipient to any of this procedure, taking care of the implants should be your outmost priority. Both of them are prone to rupture and damage but differ in terms of how they occur. When saline implants get damaged, it will leak to the body and the fluid is immediately absorbed and disappears. Silicone implants on the other hand will still retain their shape and may require an MRI scan to detect a leak.

There are still many factors that needed some serious considerations when it comes to implants and only a certified physician can give an official advice which one will work best for you.
